Preventing Welding Fume Fever

Metal fume fever is a serious safety issue for welders that is easily prevented by using the correct ventilation with fume extraction arms and fume filters.

Metal fume fever got its name from the flu-like symptoms that sufferers feel including fever, chills, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pains. They may also report a sweet or metallic taste or distored sense of taste.

Welders get metal fume fever by inhaling metal oxide fumes when they are welding. Although doctors don't know exactly why inhaling the fumes cause the symptoms, they theorize that the metal particles from the fumes cause an immune reaction as they injure the airways and the lungs. It's possible these fumes modify proteins in the lungs which cause an allergic reaction.

It can take up to four days to recover from one exposure to metal fumes, but constant exposure can quickly develop into serious chronic conditions such as bronchitis, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, nasal cancer and even bone damage.

The best way to prevent metal fume fever is to avoid exposure to metal fumes by providing proper ventilations and extractio of the fumes and respirators for the welders. Monkey Arms provides several models of fume extractors for use by welders including fume extraction arms, fume filters and our newest portable fume filter, the Porta-Flex fume extractor. Stay safe!
